Chicago, IL – A man accused of violently attacking and robbing a passenger aboard a CTA Red Line train has been arrested and charged following a multi-unit Chicago Police investigation, authorities said this week.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred Sunday, January 25, when a 23-year-old man was riding a northbound Red Line train. Police said the suspect allegedly approached the victim, began yelling, and struck him multiple times in the face before stealing his belongings.

Investigators said the assault continued after the train arrived at the North/Clybourn station, where the victim followed the suspect off the train. Police said the suspect allegedly struck the victim again before fleeing the station on foot.

Detectives from the Citywide Robbery Task Force, working alongside the Public Transportation Section and CTA Safety and Security, were assigned to the case. Officials said members of the Strategic Decision Support Center reviewed footage from the CTA’s camera network while detectives interviewed the victim.

Police said images of the suspect were distributed through a public community alert and an internal law enforcement bulletin. Members of the Public Transportation Section Tactical Team later recognized the suspect from the alert.

Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Aaron Hughes, who was allegedly recognized by officers and later positively identified by the victim in a photo array. Police said Hughes has prior convictions for robbery and armed robbery.

On Thursday, January 30, officers located Hughes on the Monroe Red Line station platform and placed him into custody without incident.

According to police, Hughes has been charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with one felony count of robbery and one felony count of aggravated battery against a transit passenger. The case remains pending.
