Lexington, KY – A significant fire weather alert has been issued across eastern and northeastern Kentucky, where dry conditions and gusty winds are creating dangerous wildfire risks through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Jackson and Charleston, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT for over 30 counties. Affected areas include Rowan, Estill, Pulaski, Laurel, Harlan, Pike, Greenup, Boyd, and Lawrence counties, among others.

South to southwest winds are expected to blow steadily around 15 mph, with gusts approaching 30 mph, especially in open areas and ridge tops. Relative humidity levels are forecast to dip as low as 20 to 25 percent, while afternoon highs could reach the mid-80s in some locations.

Officials warn that any fire that ignites under these conditions could spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged throughout the warning period.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks, secure trailer chains, and dispose of cigarettes properly. Fire crews remain on high alert across the region.

The Red Flag Warning may be extended if dry and breezy conditions persist into the weekend. For updates, residents should monitor the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
