Southwest Kansas residents should prepare for light snow and dangerously cold temperatures as an arctic front moves in this weekend. Accumulations are expected late Sunday into Monday, with areas near Dodge City likely to see the largest impact.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, light, powdery snow is forecast to begin Sunday night. Total snow accumulations are expected to remain minor, but the larger concern is a sharp temperature drop. Wind chills could fall well below zero as arctic air settles in by Monday morning.

Drivers should take caution on major roadways, including U.S. Highway 50 and U.S. Highway 283, where icy patches could develop, especially overnight. Authorities recommend limiting travel during peak freezing hours.

The forecast calls for increasing clouds on Saturday, with highs near 27°F. By Sunday, highs will struggle to reach 25°F, dropping to a low of 10°F overnight. Monday brings the coldest temperatures of the season, with highs around 20°F and lows nearing 0°F.

Looking ahead, temperatures will begin to recover by midweek, with sunny skies and highs near 29°F on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, residents should remain vigilant for icy roads and dress in layers to protect against extreme cold.

Stay tuned to local forecasts for updates, and check road conditions before traveling. Ensure pets and livestock are protected from freezing temperatures, and prepare emergency kits for vehicles in case of delays.
