Wichita, KS – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow and gusty winds across central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, making travel hazardous through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, snowfall totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected, with southeast Kansas possibly seeing over 10 inches. Northeast winds gusting up to 35 mph will cause blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially in areas like Wichita, Salina, and Independence.
Portions of central and south-central Kansas, including Hutchinson, Great Bend, and Wellington, will see 3 to 6 inches of snow with similar wind conditions. The storm is expected to disrupt both morning and evening commutes on Tuesday, with slippery roads and low visibility.
Officials are urging residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. Motorists are advised to check road conditions by calling 511. This storm marks one of the most significant snowfalls in Kansas this winter, with widespread impacts on transportation and daily activities.
