Wichita, Kan. – A brief chance for isolated thunderstorms Friday afternoon will be replaced by an increasingly hot stretch of summer weather, with parts of central and south-central Kansas expected to reach triple-digit temperatures early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon across southeast Kansas, while much of central and south-central Kansas remains hot and humid. Afternoon highs Friday will range from 89 to 93 degrees, with overnight lows settling into the lower to mid-70s.

A steady warming trend begins over the weekend. Highs will climb into the 92 to 95 degree range Saturday despite breezy conditions before increasing to 95 to 98 degrees Sunday. By Monday and Tuesday, many communities across the region, including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Newton, El Dorado and Winfield, are forecast to reach 98 to 102 degrees, marking the hottest weather of the upcoming week.

While Friday’s thunderstorms are expected to remain isolated, any stronger cell over southeast Kansas could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and brief heavy rainfall before activity diminishes Friday evening.

As the heat intensifies next week, residents should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. The National Weather Service will continue monitoring temperatures, and heat-related advisories may become necessary if the warming trend continues into the middle of next week.
