Wichita, Kansas – Residents across central, south-central and southeast Kansas should prepare for a dramatic shift from mild early-week weather to dangerous heat and a growing risk of severe thunderstorms by Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, temperatures will remain relatively comfortable Monday before climbing steadily through midweek. Highs are expected to reach the mid-80s Tuesday before soaring into the 90s and lower 100s Wednesday. Some locations across south-central Kansas could reach 102 degrees during the afternoon.

Storm chances return Tuesday afternoon and night, primarily across southeast Kansas. However, the more significant weather threat develops Wednesday night as a stronger system approaches the region.

Forecasters have outlined a Slight Risk, or Level 2 out of 5, for severe thunderstorms across portions of eastern and southeast Kansas, including areas near Emporia, Eureka, Chanute and Coffeyville. Wichita, Hutchinson, Winfield and surrounding communities remain near the broader storm threat zone.

The combination of extreme heat, humidity and an approaching weather system could support severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind gusts, large hail and intense lightning Wednesday night. Travel disruptions may develop along Interstate 35, the Kansas Turnpike and other major roadways if storms intensify after sunset.

Residents should take precautions against the heat Wednesday by staying hydrated and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Additional severe weather outlooks, watches and warnings may be issued as confidence increases in the midweek storm threat.
