Topeka, Kansas – Drivers across central and northeast Kansas face a tight morning window of icy travel as freezing drizzle leaves a light glaze on roads before 9 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for portions of central, east central, north central and northeast Kansas. Freezing drizzle is producing up to a light glaze of ice, especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads.
Communities under the advisory include Topeka, Manhattan, Junction City, Concordia, Marysville, Abilene and Hiawatha. Interstate 70 near Topeka and Junction City, along with stretches of I-35 and U.S. 24, may develop isolated slick spots during the peak commute. Elevated surfaces cool first, increasing the risk of patchy ice where pavement temperatures dip below 32°F.
Shawnee, Riley, Geary and Pottawatomie counties remain under the advisory through midmorning. Motorists should slow down, leave extra stopping distance and allow additional travel time. Kansas road conditions are available by calling 511.
Conditions should gradually improve after 9 a.m. as temperatures climb above freezing, but drivers should remain alert for lingering slick patches into the late morning hours.
