Dodge City, Kansas – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across central and southwest Kansas from this afternoon through early Friday, bringing the highest rain totals and flash flood potential along a frontal boundary stretching from the Texas panhandle into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the best chance for significant rainfall will be between 4 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday. While the severe threat is low, a few storms could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to a quarter inch. The primary concern is heavy downpours leading to isolated flash flooding, especially south and east of Dodge City.

Residents in Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and as far north as Hays should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions and potential water over highways. Local emergency management urges drivers to avoid flooded roads, keep devices charged, and monitor local alerts. Isolated higher rain totals near 1.5 inches are possible, with most areas expecting between 0.5 and 1 inch.

Localized flash flooding remains possible tonight, with more updates likely as storms develop. Further advisories could be issued if rainfall rates increase or storms intensify.
