Wichita, Kansas – An arctic air mass combined with accumulating snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of Kansas from Friday through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, mild temperatures Wednesday will give way to a sharp cold front, with arctic air arriving Friday and remaining in place through Sunday. Snow is expected to develop late Friday afternoon or evening, continuing through Saturday night, particularly across southern Kansas.

Forecast probability maps show a 50 to 80 percent chance of at least 4 inches of snow across portions of south-central and southeast Kansas, including areas near Wichita, Hutchinson, Harper, and Winfield. Some locations also carry a 30 to 50 percent chance of 6 inches or more, with the highest probabilities closer to the Oklahoma border.

While snowfall amounts may vary, the National Weather Service emphasizes that moderate travel impacts are likely, including snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and disruptions to daily activities. Hazardous conditions are expected on major routes such as Interstates 35, 135, and 235, along with U.S. highways and rural roads.

Temperatures will fall sharply behind the storm. Highs are forecast to drop into the single digits to teens Friday and Saturday, with overnight lows near or below zero. Wind chills may fall below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite and compounding travel hazards.

Officials urge residents to complete preparations before Friday, monitor forecast updates, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavier snowfall. Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles.

Commuters, weekend travelers, and freight operators across Kansas should be prepared for dangerous roadway conditions from Friday afternoon through Saturday night.
