Chanute, Kansas – Residents in southeast Kansas should prepare for isolated storms producing dime- to nickel-sized hail through 4 a.m. Wednesday, with cities like Chanute and Coffeyville under the highest threat.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the storms are expected to remain scattered but capable of generating small hail, especially in the southeast quadrant of the state. The weather hazard will persist into the early morning hours, mainly affecting areas near the Oklahoma border.

Communities in Neosho and Montgomery counties are urged to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive warnings. The risk zone includes U.S. Route 169 and surrounding rural areas, where storm cells may intensify briefly.

While widespread damage isn’t anticipated, even small hail can dent vehicles and damage tender crops. Overnight travelers and early morning commuters should be cautious, particularly in poorly lit or rural areas.

Storm activity should taper off after sunrise, but the National Weather Service warns more storm chances could return later this week. Keep weather apps updated and stay tuned to local alerts overnight.
