Wichita, Kansas – A burst of strong thunderstorms could impact Wichita and surrounding areas by Tuesday afternoon, leading to hazardous travel along I-135 and across Sedgwick County.

According to the National Weather Service, a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops during the day Tuesday, with storms growing more widespread overnight. Rain chances jump to 80% by Wednesday, bringing likely downpours across central Kansas, including Wichita, Valley Center, and Park City. Showers may persist into Thursday morning before a drier, cooler pattern sets in.

Drivers should prepare for sudden reductions in visibility, ponding on roads, and gusty winds. Travelers along major routes like I-135 and U.S. 54 are urged to use extra caution, especially during heavy downpours Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Residents should secure outdoor items, check weather alerts frequently, and avoid driving through flooded areas.

By Wednesday, highs will reach near 68°F with widespread rain expected to taper off late in the day. Wednesday night remains unsettled, with a 60% chance of additional showers and isolated thunderstorms. Cooler air filters in behind the storm system, dropping overnight lows into the 40s by Thursday night.

The five-day outlook shows a return to more spring-like conditions by Friday. Expect partly sunny skies and highs climbing to around 73°F. Saturday and Sunday carry slight chances for showers and thunderstorms, but temperatures will stay mild with highs in the mid-70s.

Warnings and advisories may change quickly with developing storms. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local alerts for updates through midweek.
