Wichita, Kansas – Damaging winds and very large hail threaten much of Kansas tonight as severe thunderstorms roll across the state from 5 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Residents from Wichita to Chanute should prepare for hazardous weather, including the risk of a few tornadoes.

According to the US National Weather Service Wichita, isolated thunderstorms may spark early Monday evening, with the most intense storms likely to develop later at night and persist into the morning. Counties including Sedgwick, Reno, Cowley, and Neosho are under heightened risk, with the strongest cells capable of producing wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines, hail larger than golf balls, and brief tornadoes.

Travel along I-35, US-400, and surrounding highways could be hazardous, especially during late-night and early morning hours. Emergency management officials urge Kansans to stay off the roads if possible and keep mobile devices charged in case of power outages. Residents in Hutchinson, Winfield, and Salina should secure outdoor objects and review shelter plans.

Storm threats are expected to linger until 8 a.m. Tuesday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve overnight. Stay tuned for updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service.
