Springfield, Missouri – Drivers across southern Missouri face hazardous conditions into early Monday as dense fog blankets the region, especially in the Ozarks and along area rivers and valleys. Visibility could drop to a half mile or less overnight, creating dangerous travel on major roads and rural highways.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, areas of localized dense fog are expected to persist through sunrise, with the greatest impacts stretching from Springfield southward to Mountain Grove, Ava, and along Highway 60. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and avoid sudden stops as thick fog may appear suddenly along river valleys and low-lying areas.

Communities including Branson, West Plains, and Rolla could see visibility reduced to near zero in some spots. Travel may be especially difficult on rural routes, bridges, and near creeks where cool air pools overnight. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises avoiding non-essential travel until fog lifts.

Dense fog is common during spring in the Ozarks, especially after recent rain and warm afternoons. Expect improving conditions after 8 a.m., but another advisory may be issued if fog lingers. Drivers should check for updates and allow extra time for morning commutes. Warnings remain in effect until further notice.
