McCook, Nebraska – Dense fog settled over northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska early Sunday, reducing visibility to less than a mile and making morning travel especially risky along highways and local roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. CDT for Decatur, Graham, and Norton counties in Kansas, as well as Hitchcock and Red Willow counties in Nebraska. The advisory covers cities such as Oberlin, Norton, Hill City, McCook, and Trenton, where patchy, thick fog is obscuring roadways and slowing early traffic.

Drivers on U.S. Highway 36 and Highway 83 should expect abrupt changes in visibility and use extreme caution, especially near river valleys and low-lying areas. Emergency officials urge motorists to slow down, turn on headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. School buses and early commuters may also be affected by rapidly changing conditions.

Similar fog events this spring have led to minor accidents and delays, underlining the need for heightened awareness this morning. Anyone who must travel should plan extra time and stay alert for sudden low-visibility stretches.

The fog is expected to lift by late morning, but authorities caution that updates may follow if conditions persist.
