Scranton, Pennsylvania – Drivers in northeastern Pennsylvania could face dangerous travel and spotty power outages Sunday as wind gusts up to 50 mph sweep through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Wind Advisory is in effect for Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Southern Wayne, and Wyoming counties from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The advisory warns of sustained northwest winds between 15 and 30 mph, with peak gusts strong enough to knock down tree limbs and unsecured objects.

Communities including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Milford, Honesdale, and Tunkhannock are most at risk for blown debris and minor damage. Utility crews in the area are preparing for the potential of scattered power outages, while PennDOT urges drivers—especially those in high-profile vehicles—to use extra caution on I-81, Route 6, and other open roadways.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture, charge devices ahead of time, and avoid parking under trees. This event comes as the region transitions into spring, echoing similar high-wind advisories from April 2021.

Wind threats are expected to diminish after 5 p.m., but NWS Binghamton advises residents to stay alert for possible extended advisories if gusts remain strong into the evening.
