Kansas City, Missouri – A seasonable winter pattern is expected to bring near-normal precipitation to Kansas and Missouri heading into mid-January, with above-normal temperatures allowing for periods of rain and occasional snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, temperatures across Kansas and Missouri are favored to run above normal during the January 9–13 period, while precipitation trends close to seasonal averages. This setup supports rain as the primary precipitation type at times, with snow mixing in briefly when colder air moves through.

Across eastern Kansas, including Topeka, Lawrence, and Wichita, precipitation may fall mainly as rain during warmer stretches, with snow possible overnight or early in the morning if temperatures dip near freezing. Western and central Missouri, including Kansas City, Columbia, and Sedalia, could see similar swings between rain and snow depending on timing.

Travel impacts are expected to be limited overall, though brief slick spots could develop on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads during colder periods. Major routes such as I-70, I-35, U.S. 50, and I-44 may see changing conditions as temperatures fluctuate.

Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for variable road conditions through the period. Additional advisories may be issued closer to mid-January if colder air lingers longer than expected or if precipitation aligns with colder overnight hours.
