Joplin, Missouri – Flooding remains a serious concern across southwest Missouri and parts of southeast Kansas this morning, with excessive rainfall threatening rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas through noon Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Flood Watch is in effect until 12 p.m. CDT for Barry, Jasper, Newton, McDonald counties in Missouri, and Cherokee County, Kansas. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with some isolated pockets reaching 3 inches, especially near Joplin, Neosho, and Columbus.

Storms moving in early Saturday are expected to trigger rapid runoff that could overwhelm drainage systems and push streams and creeks out of their banks. Areas like Carthage, Noel, and Pineville are especially vulnerable to flash flooding, road ponding, and potential travel delays.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and monitor local alerts. Residents near flood-prone zones are urged to keep mobile devices charged and prepare for quick evacuations if needed. School and community event disruptions are possible throughout the morning.

This is the same region hit by heavy spring rains in late May, which already saturated soils, increasing today’s flood potential. The Flood Watch remains in effect until noon, with additional warnings possible later in the day.
