Topeka, KS – Strong winds are expected across Kansas, prompting a High Wind Warning and a Wind Advisory that could cause power outages and hazardous travel conditions through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday until 4 a.m. Wednesday for Lyon County, including Emporia. South winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are anticipated. By early Wednesday morning, the advisory transitions into a High Wind Warning, effective from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, bringing northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 60 mph.

The High Wind Warning also covers multiple counties, including Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, and Wabaunsee. Winds in these areas will range from 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, posing significant risks such as tree and power line damage, widespread power outages, and dangerous driving conditions for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, stay indoors during peak winds, and use caution when driving. Authorities recommend remaining in lower levels of buildings and staying away from windows due to the potential for falling debris and tree limbs.
