Wichita, KS – Strong winds and low humidity are creating dangerous fire conditions across Kansas as spring approaches this week. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening, with extreme grassland fire danger expected across multiple counties, including Sedgwick, Cowley, and Butler.
According to the National Weather Service, winds will increase from the south at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Combined with relative humidity as low as 16%, any fires that start could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should remain alert for any fire-related warnings or advisories.
Monday’s forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 78°F, but winds will steadily increase throughout the day. Monday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 60°F, with winds gusting up to 34 mph. By Tuesday, temperatures will climb to 83°F, but breezy conditions will persist.
By Tuesday night, a 40% chance of rain will arrive, offering some relief from the dry spell. Wednesday will bring a mix of sun and clouds with another 40% chance of rain before noon. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the mid-50s and 60s through the end of the week.
Looking Ahead: Spring officially begins Thursday, bringing milder conditions with sunny skies and highs in the mid-to-upper 60s. Stay weather-aware and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires.
