Wichita, KS – A small earthquake rattled parts of central Kansas late Monday night, with the epicenter reported just east-southeast of Marion and northeast of Wichita.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the 2.6 magnitude quake occurred at approximately 10:07 p.m. local time and had a depth of 9.8 kilometers. The epicenter was pinpointed about 7 kilometers ESE of Marion, Kansas, not far from U.S. Route 50 and within reach of the Wichita metro area.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and by early Tuesday, the USGS had not received any public responses through its “Did You Feel It?” reporting system. Due to its modest magnitude and depth, the quake may have gone unfelt by many in the area.

While Kansas is not known for frequent seismic activity, minor tremors have occasionally been recorded across the region. Seismologists continue to monitor these events, which are typically attributed to natural tectonic shifts, though some have been linked to industrial practices such as wastewater injection.

USGS officials have reviewed and confirmed the quake, and continue to gather data from regional sensors to track ongoing activity in the area.

Residents who may have experienced shaking are encouraged to share their observations with the USGS to aid scientific tracking and analysis.
