Goodland, KS – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for northeast Colorado and northwest Kansas until 11 a.m. MST (noon CST) Tuesday. Wind chills as low as 30 degrees below zero are expected, creating a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that affected areas include Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Sherman, Wallace, and Greeley counties. Cities such as Goodland, Burlington, and Tribune are among those experiencing the dangerously low temperatures.

Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents are advised to wear layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves, if venturing outdoors. Precautions should also be taken to protect pets and livestock, including providing warm shelter, food, and water.

Extended freezing temperatures could also lead to ruptured water pipes. The NWS urges individuals to check on vulnerable family members and neighbors while ensuring portable heaters are used safely to avoid fire or carbon monoxide hazards.

The extreme cold is expected to subside by midday, with slightly warmer temperatures later in the day. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates and prepare for potential travel delays due to icy conditions.
