KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A hard freeze and pockets of dense fog blanketed much of eastern Kansas and central Missouri early Sunday, with temperatures dipping as low as 26°F in some rural valleys. The National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill reports a Freeze Warning and Dense Fog Advisory remain in effect through 8 a.m., affecting major corridors including I-70, I-35, and U.S. 36.
According to the weather service, widespread frost has formed across the metro and outlying areas including St. Joseph, Kirksville, Columbia, and Sedalia, while visibility in some northern counties has fallen below a quarter mile. The combination of freezing air and fog has created slick bridges and patchy frost on untreated roads early this morning.
The NWS urges residents to protect sensitive plants, outdoor faucets, and livestock water lines, and for drivers to use headlights, slow down, and allow extra space until fog lifts mid-morning. Sunshine is expected by late morning with afternoon highs reaching the lower 50s, offering some relief from the cold start.
Temperatures will remain cool but seasonable this week, with another light frost possible Tuesday morning before a gradual warm-up into the 60s by midweek.
