Kansas City, Mo. – Comfortable summer weather won’t last much longer across northwest and west-central Missouri as a steady warming trend pushes temperatures into the upper 90s by late week, with heat index values approaching or even exceeding 100 degrees by Friday and Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, seasonable temperatures will continue through Monday with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 80s. A gradual warming trend will then take hold through the workweek as dry weather allows temperatures to climb above normal by midweek.

Kansas City is expected to warm from 89 degrees Monday to 91 Tuesday, 94 Wednesday, 94 Thursday, 95 Friday and 96 degrees Saturday. Similar temperatures are forecast across St. Joseph, Maryville, Sedalia, Chillicothe, Kirksville, Moberly and Butler, with many locations reaching the middle to upper 90s by the weekend.

Humidity will also increase as the week progresses, causing afternoon heat index values to approach 100 degrees by Thursday and potentially exceed 100 degrees Friday and Saturday, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon.

The extended stretch of dry weather will make it easier for temperatures to build each day, creating elevated risks for heat-related illnesses for anyone spending prolonged time outdoors. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and schedule strenuous activities during the morning or evening hours whenever possible.

Little to no rainfall is expected through the end of the week, allowing the hot pattern to persist into the weekend. Additional heat advisories could become necessary if forecast heat index values continue to trend higher.
