KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Triple-digit heat will push Kansas City to dangerous levels Saturday, with heat indexes climbing as high as 108 degrees. The National Weather Service warns that outdoor activity could quickly turn hazardous, especially along heavily traveled routes like I-70 and I-35.

According to the NWS in Pleasant Hill, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 16. Portions of east-central and northwest Missouri will see temperatures in the upper 90s, but humidity will drive the heat index far higher. Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous outdoor work during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

The extreme heat will be most intense in urban areas, where concrete and asphalt trap warmth well into the evening. Drivers should take caution with vehicle breakdown risks increasing in high heat, and travelers on I-435, U.S. 71, and other major routes are encouraged to keep extra water on hand.

Cooling centers remain open across the Kansas City metro, with locations listed on local government websites. Anyone feeling dizziness, nausea, or excessive fatigue should seek shade or air conditioning immediately.

The heat will ease slightly by Monday, but highs will still approach the mid-90s. Afternoon storms may bring relief by Tuesday night.
