Wichita, KS – Central Kansas is on alert as severe storms are expected to develop this evening, with the National Weather Service in Wichita issuing warnings for the region. The storms, expected to begin around 5 p.m. and continue until midnight, could bring winds exceeding 70 mph, half-dollar-sized hail, and locally heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest risk is concentrated over central Kansas, including cities like Wichita, Hutchinson, and Salina. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions, particularly if traveling or engaging in outdoor activities during the evening hours.

The risk for severe weather follows a period of intense heat across the region, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits. The heat is expected to persist into the weekend, with highs remaining near or above 100 degrees through Sunday.

Thursday’s forecast shows a slight dip in temperatures, with a high of 100°F, followed by slightly cooler conditions on Friday and Saturday, with highs in the upper 90s. By Sunday, temperatures are expected to climb back to 96°F, continuing the hot and dry pattern.

Given the combination of severe weather and extreme heat, residents should remain vigilant and prepare for potential power outages, especially during peak storm hours. The combination of strong winds, hail, and heat can pose significant risks, so taking early precautions is highly recommended.
