Dodge City, KS – A powerful winter storm is bringing blizzard conditions to central and western Kansas Wednesday morning, with heavy snow and extreme winds making travel hazardous. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning until 1 p.m. CDT, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, snowfall totals will range between 2 and 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. However, the primary concern is wind gusts reaching 75 mph, which will cause whiteout conditions and dangerously low visibility, particularly along and north of U.S. Highway 50. Snow will taper off west to east by Wednesday afternoon.
The storm is expected to significantly impact the Wednesday morning commute, with widespread blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile at times. Officials warn of slippery roads, downed trees, and power outages due to the combination of wet snow and intense winds.
Authorities urge residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the roads should carry a winter survival kit, including blankets, extra clothing, food, and water. If stranded, staying inside the vehicle is the safest option.
For the latest road conditions, travelers can dial 511 or check state transportation websites.
