Kankakee, Illinois The Kankakee River will once again be the backdrop for a beloved summer tradition as Illinois’ largest family fishing derby returns June 27 through July 6, 2025.
According to the Northern Illinois Anglers Association, the 42nd Annual Kankakee River Fishing Derby will feature ten days of fishing fun, prizes, and community bonding. With support from local sponsors including the Daily Journal, NECA/IBEW Local 176, and the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office, the event is expected to draw thousands of participants.
Among the standout attractions is the chance to win $2,500 in cash, $500 daily prizes, and the coveted grand prize—a boat, motor, and trailer package. The derby also features special tagged fish like the “Reel Justice” fish, sponsored by State’s Attorney Jim Rowe. Anyone who catches this particular fish could reel in a $500 cash reward.
Designed as a family-friendly event, the derby includes kid-specific contests, merchandise giveaways, and over 97 prize categories. Registration is just $20 per family, keeping the focus on accessibility and community engagement. Little anglers will also have their shot at prizes thanks to categories created specifically for young participants.
Local businesses and civic organizations are stepping up to support the event, providing merchandise, services, and donations to ensure this year’s derby is the most rewarding yet. Prizes range from cash and gear to gift certificates and fishing accessories, all meant to encourage participation across all ages and experience levels.
The derby not only promotes outdoor recreation but also fosters community spirit, making it one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Kankakee County.
