Kankakee, IL – Heavy lake effect snow continues to slam Kankakee County early Monday, creating dangerous travel conditions and leading to a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect until noon CST, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.
Forecasters report total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, with localized bursts producing snow rates exceeding 2 inches per hour. The NWS warns that these intense snow bands could temporarily cripple travel across parts of the county, including Bourbonnais, Bradley, and Kankakee.
Lake effect snow patterns are highly localized, meaning conditions can shift from light flurries to whiteout visibility within just a few miles. Commuters are urged to delay travel if possible and give snowplows room to operate as road crews work to keep highways and local streets passable.
Drivers who must travel should reduce speed, maintain extra distance, and keep an emergency kit—including food, water, and blankets—in their vehicles. The NWS emphasizes that visibility and road conditions may change rapidly throughout the morning.
The Winter Storm Warning is expected to expire by noon Monday, but lingering flurries and drifting snow may continue to affect roads into the afternoon.
