Kankakee, IL – Residents in Kankakee now have access to a new mental health crisis response service designed to provide immediate, community-based support without involving law enforcement.

According to Thresholds, one of Illinois’ largest providers of mental health and substance use services, the organization has expanded its Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) into Kankakee earlier this month. The service includes a dedicated local crisis line and a mobile team available 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

The MCRT offers a free, peer-led alternative to traditional emergency responses, such as police intervention or psychiatric hospitalization. Instead, trained responders provide in-person support tailored to each individual’s needs, helping de-escalate situations and connect residents with ongoing care.

Officials say the expansion reflects growing demand for community-based mental health resources. Thresholds operates a similar program on Chicago’s north side, where the team has responded to more than 6,000 calls since launching.

The program is designed to improve outcomes by delivering compassionate, specialized care directly to residents experiencing a mental health crisis. Advocates note that this approach can reduce unnecessary hospital visits and create safer interactions for individuals in distress.

Local leaders say the addition of the service fills a critical gap in Kankakee County, offering residents a new option during emergencies that prioritizes care over enforcement.

Residents can access the service through a dedicated crisis line, with responders dispatched directly to homes or community locations when needed.
