Kankakee, IL – The Kankakee City Council has updated its cannabis ordinance to align with Illinois state laws, four years after the state legalized recreational marijuana. The amendment, passed during Monday’s council meeting, reflects significant changes in the state’s approach to marijuana since the legalization in January 2020.
Illinois has been at the forefront of progressive cannabis legislation in the Midwest. Since the state legislature passed a bill in 2019, Illinois residents aged 21 and over are legally permitted to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, and 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products. The state also allows medical marijuana patients to grow up to five cannabis plants at home for personal use, although public consumption remains illegal.
