Kankakee County, Ill. – County officials have released new aerial imagery mapping recent tornado damage to support recovery efforts.
According to a March 24, 2026 press release from the Kankakee County Planning Department, the county’s GIS division has made high-resolution aerial photographs publicly available online. The imagery documents areas impacted by a tornado that tracked from U.S. Route 45/52 to Illinois Route 1, extending roughly two miles north and south of that corridor.
Officials said the images were captured on March 19, 2026, and are intended to assist residents, property owners, and agencies involved in cleanup and rebuilding.
The imagery can be accessed through the county’s GIS platform at k3gis.com by selecting the K3-Mapper tool. Instructions provided by the county outline how to toggle layers and view both standard and color infrared imagery for additional detail.
Color infrared options may help identify vegetation damage and structural impacts not immediately visible in standard aerial views, according to the release.
County officials said the resource is available to anyone who may find it useful, including contractors, insurance assessors, and emergency management teams.
For residents and commuters in affected areas, the maps provide a clearer understanding of damage zones and ongoing recovery activity.
