Kankakee, IL – Adults looking to earn a high school equivalency diploma or improve their English language skills will have additional opportunities this fall as Kankakee Community College expands its Adult and Community Education program with new Saturday classes.
According to Kankakee Community College, the new Saturday GED preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes begin Saturday, Aug. 22, and will meet from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the college’s main campus, 100 College Drive in Kankakee. Additional daytime and evening GED and ESL classes begin the week of Monday, Aug. 17, with courses also offered in Bradley, Momence, and Watseka.
All Adult Education classes are offered free of charge.
“Adult education is about creating opportunities,” said Shannan Carrell, director of Adult and Community Education at KCC. “Our classes are free, and we provide the support students need to succeed. Whether someone wants to earn a high school diploma, improve their English skills, or prepare for college or a new career, we’re here to help them take that first step.”
KCC is the largest provider of pre-college and remedial education services in the Kankakee and Iroquois county area. In addition to GED preparation and ESL instruction, the college also offers basic literacy programs, including one-on-one tutoring scheduled at times convenient for students and volunteers.
Charlotte Kramer, coordinator of GED programs at KCC, said earning a GED can open doors to higher education, workforce training, and expanded career opportunities while helping build confidence.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals with a high school diploma generally experience lower unemployment rates than those without one.
