Kankakee, IL – Patients in Kankakee County will continue to have in-network access to care at Ascension Saint Mary – Kankakee after a new agreement between Prime Healthcare Illinois hospitals and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL).
According to a joint update released Thursday, May 7, 2026, all Prime Healthcare Illinois hospitals and medical groups, including St. Mary in Kankakee, will remain in-network beyond the previously anticipated June 1 deadline. The agreement ensures patients will not face disruptions in coverage or increased out-of-pocket costs.
St. Mary Hospital serves Kankakee County and surrounding communities, providing emergency care, surgical services, and a range of outpatient treatments. The hospital is considered a key provider in the region, particularly for patients relying on BCBSIL insurance plans.
Officials said BCBSIL will rescind earlier termination notices tied to the June deadline, allowing uninterrupted care across Illinois facilities within the Prime Healthcare system. The agreement follows concerns from patients and healthcare providers about potential gaps in access if a deal was not reached.
Prime Healthcare operates dozens of hospitals nationwide, including several in Illinois, and emphasized its commitment to maintaining access to essential services. BCBSIL also highlighted the importance of preserving provider networks for communities across the state.
For Kankakee-area residents, the update means continued access to trusted local care without needing to switch providers or travel farther for in-network services.
