Kankakee, IL – Bonfield Grade School in Herscher Community Unit School District No. 2 has temporarily shut down its water supply after recent tests detected coliform bacteria. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) flagged the test results, raising concerns about the potential risk of E. coli contamination.
The school, which relies on a well for its water supply, conducts annual water testing as required by Illinois law. After this week’s sample tested positive for coliform bacteria, all drinking water sources at the school were shut off as a precaution. The district is now working with IDPH to trace the source of the contamination and ensure the water is safe before it’s restored.
Coliform bacteria are typically found in soil, vegetation, and the intestines of humans and animals. While not typically harmful themselves, their presence in drinking water can signal a risk of more dangerous pathogens, such as E. coli, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
Superintendent Dr. Richard S. Decman emphasized that ensuring the health and safety of students and staff is the district’s highest priority. Until further notice, students and staff are encouraged to bring their own bottled water, with additional bottled water being provided by the school.
