Kankakee, IL – Matt Alexander-Hildebrand has been named the new Chairman of the Kankakee County Board, following the resignation of Andrew Wheeler. Hildebrand, who had been serving as Vice-Chair, steps into the role after Wheeler’s departure, which leaves a vacancy in Bourbonnais District 26.
Wheeler’s resignation was announced at a special County Board meeting on Tuesday. Some board members reportedly sought his resignation due to his alleged lack of involvement since starting a new job. Wheeler submitted a resignation letter to State’s Attorney Jim Rowe, defending his time on the board. In his letter, Wheeler noted the accomplishments made during his tenure, calling the work “historic” and “bipartisan.”
Wheeler had served as Board Chairman since December 2016. He did not seek re-election in the recent primary and was set to leave his position at the end of November. Hildebrand’s promotion marks a shift in leadership as the board prepares for a new chapter. The board must now fill the Bourbonnais seat.
