Geneva, Illinois – A person struck by a train halted Metra UP West service, disrupting Thursday morning commutes.
According to Metra, the incident occurred near the west suburban city of Geneva early Thursday morning, involving a person described as a trespasser. Rail service along the Union Pacific West line was immediately impacted as crews responded to the scene.
Metra officials said multiple inbound trains were altered due to the disruption. A train scheduled to depart from Elburn at 7:25 a.m. and another from Geneva at 7:49 a.m. were rerouted to originate from West Chicago instead. Additionally, a 7:10 a.m. departure from Elburn was unable to travel beyond West Chicago.
The extent of injuries or the condition of the individual struck has not been released. Authorities have not provided further details on the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The disruption affected a key commuter corridor connecting far western suburbs to downtown Chicago, causing delays during peak travel hours. Riders were advised to monitor Metra alerts for updates and allow for extra travel time.
Incidents involving trespassers on rail lines remain a recurring safety concern across the region, often leading to significant service interruptions.
The delays may impact students and workers traveling into the city during the morning rush.
