Jacksonville, Fla. – A Tropical Storm Watch has been posted for northeast Florida’s coastal waters as winds up to 45 mph and seas topping 16 feet are expected from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the watch covers waters from Altamaha Sound, Georgia, south to Flagler Beach, Florida, including offshore zones extending up to 60 nautical miles. Mariners can expect northeast winds of 25 to 35 knots, building seas of 11 to 16 feet, and dangerous conditions that could capsize smaller craft.
The greatest hazards will be felt offshore and along the beaches of Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Fernandina Beach, where rough surf and rip currents will likely worsen through early next week. Authorities urge boaters to remain in port and secure vessels ahead of the storm’s approach.
Residents along the coast should prepare for minor coastal flooding, strong rip currents, and beach erosion beginning Monday. Local officials say conditions could deteriorate quickly as tropical storm–force winds move closer to shore.
The Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect until Tuesday, and further advisories may be issued as the system approaches.
