Jackson, Kentucky – Fires could ignite and spread quickly across eastern Kentucky within hours as dry air and parched ground combine with increasing wind, creating a volatile setup through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, humidity levels remain critically low Saturday and will drop again Sunday as winds strengthen to 15 to 25 mph between 10 a.m. and sunset, sharply increasing the risk of rapid fire growth across more than 30 counties.

Communities from Somerset and London to Pikeville and Harlan face the highest risk, especially near wooded terrain and rural roadways like KY-80 and U.S. 23 where dry brush is abundant. Fire crews warn that even small sparks—from equipment, cigarettes, or debris burning—could lead to fast-moving wildfires.

McCreary County remains under a burn ban, with additional restrictions possible elsewhere. State law already prohibits burning between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. within 150 feet of जंगल or brushland during the spring fire season.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and keep water sources nearby. Conditions begin to ease after sunset Saturday, but the threat quickly rebuilds Sunday morning.

Warnings remain in effect through Sunday evening, with additional advisories possible if winds intensify.
