PROSPECT, OR – A man is recovering after surviving a 300-foot fall into a Rogue River canyon early Saturday morning, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Search and Rescue and several partner agencies.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at 2:19 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, reporting that a man had gone over a cliff in the 1100 block of Mill Creek Drive near Prospect. Witnesses told dispatchers they could hear the man calling for help from below.
Responders from Jackson County Fire District 4, Fire District 3, and the JCSO Technical Rope Rescue Team determined a high-angle rescue would be required due to the steep terrain. Using 400 feet of rope and a litter, rescue crews reached the injured man and safely raised him from the canyon floor.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Mercy Flights Inc. transported the man by air ambulance to a local hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition. The rescue operation involved 42 combined volunteer hours, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials emphasized the importance of local volunteers, noting that the county’s Search and Rescue program relies heavily on community support and participation.
