Iroquois, IL – A Milford man is in custody after allegedly shooting a woman at a rural railroad crossing outside Iroquois on Monday, then fleeing the scene and leading law enforcement on a multi-county search that ended in Indiana.
According to the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when 38-year-old Nicholas Gregory left his vehicle parked on the railroad tracks near 2150 N. 2750 E. He then reportedly entered a nearby residence, stole a vehicle from the homeowner’s driveway, and returned to the railroad crossing in the stolen car.
Upon his return, 57-year-old Angela Taylor of Donovan was stopped in front of the truck Gregory had abandoned on the tracks. Authorities say Gregory approached Taylor’s vehicle, and as she exited to assess the situation, he allegedly fired a single shot from a pistol, striking her. He then fled the scene, leaving the stolen truck behind.
Taylor was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, where she was pronounced dead.
Shortly after, Gregory arrived at a residence in Watseka, where he reportedly told the homeowner he intended to kill them before fleeing once again. Watseka Police joined the ongoing search.
Gregory was later located in Jasper County, Indiana. A pursuit ensued involving both Jasper and Newton County Sheriff’s Departments. He was eventually taken into custody by Newton County deputies and extradited to Iroquois County Jail.
Gregory has been charged with First Degree Murder. The investigation remains ongoing.
