Des Moines, Iowa – Anyone planning outdoor activities across Iowa this week will trade summer heat for cooler temperatures and multiple chances for rain, with the most widespread thunderstorms expected between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, below-normal temperatures will dominate the workweek across central Iowa. Afternoon highs are expected to remain mostly in the mid-70s to lower 80s through Friday, offering a noticeably cooler stretch compared to typical late-June conditions.

The first round of rain arrives Tuesday, with storm chances increasing to 40% to 60% during the afternoon and evening hours, especially across western and northern Iowa. The greatest potential for widespread showers and thunderstorms develops overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, when probabilities climb to 60% to 80%, particularly across northern portions of the state.

Cities including Fort Dodge, Mason City, Ames and northern sections of the Des Moines metro could see periods of rain and occasional lightning during the overnight period and Wednesday morning commute. While severe weather is not currently highlighted, brief heavy rainfall and reduced visibility may impact travel.

Rain chances continue later in the week. Thursday brings a 20% to 30% chance of afternoon rainfall, primarily across southern Iowa, while scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible Friday with probabilities ranging from 20% to 40%.

The cooler pattern is expected to persist through the end of the workweek, with additional forecast updates likely as the midweek storm system approaches. Residents should monitor local forecasts for timing adjustments and any potential weather advisories.
