Des Moines, IA – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for much of Iowa on Wednesday as freezing rain and drizzle are expected to create hazardous road conditions across the state.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, light freezing rain will begin in southern Iowa Wednesday morning, gradually spreading northward into the afternoon. The advisory remains in place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for areas south of I-80, while central Iowa, including Des Moines, remains under the advisory from noon to 9 p.m.

Forecasters warn that ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, which may lead to slippery sidewalks, roads, and bridges. The hazardous conditions could significantly impact the Wednesday evening commute, especially in cities like Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Ottumwa.

Drivers are advised to use caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for travel. The NWS also warns of potential power outages due to ice buildup on power lines.

For real-time road conditions, travelers are encouraged to check the Iowa 511 app or visit 511ia.org.
