Des Moines, IA – Iowa residents are bracing for dangerously low temperatures as an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect late Monday night through Tuesday morning across much of the state, including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, wind chills between 20 and 40 below zero are expected, with the coldest conditions forecast for northern and central Iowa. The advisory warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
A Cold Weather Advisory will also be in place from midnight Sunday to noon Monday for areas in north-central Iowa, including Fort Dodge and Mason City, where wind chills could reach 30 below zero. Additional cold weather alerts are likely throughout the week as frigid conditions persist.
Residents are urged to wear layers, including hats, face masks, and gloves when venturing outdoors. Officials also advise travelers to carry emergency kits and limit time outside during peak cold hours. Schools and businesses may face disruptions due to the extreme temperatures.
