Des Moines, IA – A significant winter storm is moving across central and southern Iowa, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions through Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, snowfall is expected to intensify between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday, with the heaviest accumulations in central and southern Iowa. Forecasts predict between 5 to 8 inches of snow in these areas, while portions of northern and west-central Iowa may see 2 to 5 inches.

Roads are expected to be slick and snow-covered, with reduced visibility due to falling and blowing snow. The Iowa Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down and check road conditions via the Iowa 511 app or website. The snow is expected to taper off from west to east by Wednesday evening.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight Wednesday night for several counties, including Cerro Gordo, Webster, Carroll, and Greene. Commuters should prepare for hazardous conditions during both the morning and evening rush hours.

Residents are advised to limit travel if possible, dress warmly, and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits. Stay updated on weather alerts through local news and the NWS.
