Springfield, IL – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for central Illinois from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday, with snow and ice expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, snowfall accumulations will range from 2 to 4 inches north of Interstate 72, including Bloomington, Normal, and Decatur. Areas south of a Decatur-to-Danville line, including Champaign, Urbana, and Springfield, could see ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Motorists should use caution and allow extra time for travel.
Further south, in counties including Shelby, Coles, Douglas, and Effingham, snowfall totals are expected to remain under 2 inches, but ice accumulation could still create dangerous road conditions.
Residents are advised to drive slowly, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions at www.gettingaroundillinois.com. Pedestrians should also be cautious, as icy sidewalks and driveways may increase the risk of falls.
This winter weather system is expected to clear by early Thursday morning, though lingering slick spots may persist.
