Des Moines, IA – Residents across Iowa are being urged to stay alert as forecasters predict an increased risk of severe weather starting Sunday evening and continuing into Monday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, thunderstorms are expected to develop across southwest Iowa Sunday night, with storm activity spreading into central parts of the state through Monday afternoon and evening. The primary threats include large hail, damaging winds, and locally heavy rainfall that could lead to ponding on roadways and low-lying areas.

The latest outlook, released early Friday morning, categorizes the risk as “Level 2” for scattered severe storms over southwest Iowa on Sunday and central and southeastern Iowa on Monday. The most intense activity is forecasted during the evening and overnight hours into Monday morning, then again Monday afternoon into the evening.

As Iowa heads into a potentially volatile weather pattern, emergency officials remind residents to prepare for possible power outages, secure outdoor items, and review severe weather safety plans.

Updates will continue to be posted on the National Weather Service Des Moines social media channels and website.
