Des Moines, IA – A wintry mix is expected to impact central Iowa late Thursday into Friday, bringing rain, snow, and potentially hazardous road conditions. Drivers should prepare for slick surfaces and reduced visibility during the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, rain will develop Thursday night before transitioning into a mix of rain and snow after midnight. Light snow accumulation is possible, but totals are expected to remain under an inch. Winds will pick up, with gusts reaching 20 mph Friday morning, making travel more difficult.
Thursday will start mostly sunny with a high near 49°F, but clouds will build as the day progresses. Overnight lows will drop to 35°F as the precipitation moves in. By Friday afternoon, the system will clear out, leaving behind partly sunny skies and a high near 46°F.
Looking ahead, the weekend will bring mild and dry conditions, with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Another cold front could move in early next week.
Travelers should check local road conditions and allow extra time for commutes. Be sure to dress warmly and prepare for wet, slushy roads Friday morning.
