Cedar Rapids, IA – High winds continue to batter much of Iowa on Friday, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph, prompting a High Wind Warning across multiple counties. Officials warn of widespread power outages and hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST Friday, covering areas including Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Waterloo, Ames, and Marshalltown. Sustained northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph, with stronger gusts, could bring down trees and power lines.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid windows, and secure loose outdoor items. If driving is necessary, extreme caution is advised, especially for semi-trucks and other tall vehicles.

The storm affects both eastern and central Iowa, including Benton, Linn, Dubuque, Black Hawk, and Story Counties. Power companies are preparing for potential outages, and emergency crews are on standby for fallen debris and blocked roadways.

Wind conditions are expected to gradually ease after sunset, but residents should remain alert for lingering effects into the evening.
