A strong line of thunderstorms is sweeping across Iowa today, bringing the potential for half-inch hail along major highways, including I-80 and I-380. The National Weather Service issued a weather alert for Iowa City, Maquoketa, and surrounding areas, urging residents to seek shelter as the storms move northeast at 50 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, these storms are expected to continue until 10:15 a.m., affecting portions of Iowa, Keokuk, and Cedar counties. Those traveling on I-80 and I-380 should exercise caution as frequent lightning accompanies these storms. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a thunderstorm, presenting a significant safety hazard even for areas outside the immediate storm path.

Local residents should prepare for minor hail-related damage, as radar indicates half-inch hail could impact objects left outdoors. With the storms moving rapidly, people outdoors are advised to seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle until the system passes. The storm path will likely impact communities including Iowa City, Coralville, Solon, and North Liberty, among others.

In addition to today’s weather, the five-day forecast predicts temperatures remaining in the mid-50s with rain showers expected throughout the week. By the weekend, conditions should improve slightly with partial clearing expected. However, gusty winds are forecast to return on Saturday, keeping temperatures cool and requiring additional layers for those heading outdoors.

As conditions can change quickly, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and exercise caution while on the road today.
