Cedar Rapids, IA – Eastern and northeastern Iowa are under an Extreme Cold Warning from 9 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday, with wind chills plunging as low as 35 below zero, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities.

The affected areas include Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Iowa City, Clinton, and surrounding counties. NWS warns that exposed skin can develop frostbite within 10 minutes, and hypothermia is a serious risk if proper precautions are not taken.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Pets should be kept indoors, and outdoor animals must have warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Those using portable heaters should follow safety guidelines, and generators or grills should never be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

With temperatures remaining dangerously low, officials encourage checking on elderly neighbors, friends, and family members who may need assistance.
